A discarded cigarette caused the fire that destroyed a home and displaced four students Monday, fire marshal Matt Lawrence said.

Former John Edwards aide in contempt of court

PITTSBORO — The former John Edwards aides who say they have sex tapes of him and Rielle Hunter, the campaign videographer who Edwards has admitted to having an affair with, are in contempt of court for not turning in the videos.

Andrew and Cheri Young are required to bring them to Orange County court by Wednesday.

Mayor declares state of emergency

4:49 P.M. FRIDAY -- Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt declared a state of emergency as the town prepares to face 3 inches to 6 inches of snow.

The state of emergency, which will last from 9 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Sunday, is intended to keep people from driving.

A Chapel Hill woman will sit in Michelle Obama's box at tonight's State of the Union address.

Town leaders hope the opening of a new Franklin Street art gallery will bring them closer to revitalizing downtown.

Foy will not run for U.S. Senate

Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy announced today he will not run for U.S. Senate in 2010.

After 12 years of public service, Foy said he feels accomplished and tired.

"It's just not good timing for me," he said. "I don't want to run another campaign. I don't want to be elected to an office right now. I'm looking forward to not being in office."

One man died and another was seriously injured after crashing into a tree in a stolen car on Old N.C. 86 on Monday night, state troopers said.

Pending notification of family, the name of the person who died cannot be released, N.C. Highway Patrol trooper Mark Melvin said.

More ballots to be counted in mayoral race

There are 77 ballots left to be sorted in the Chapel HIll mayoral race that left Mark Kleinschmidt and Matt Czajkowski 99 votes apart, said Tracy Reams, director of the Orange County Board of Elections.

Kleinschmidt was declared mayor-elect Tuesday night and Czajkowski conceded.

Halloween draws 15,000 more than last year

Franklin Street drew 50,000 Halloween celebrators at the peak of the night, police said.

That's 15,000 more than last year's attendance, despite town efforts to limit the celebration, Chapel Hill police Lt. Kevin Gunter said.

After evaluating the crowd size, police felt it would not be safe to clear the street at midnight as planned, Gunter said. It was cleared at 12:20 a.m.
