Broad Sheets

I took a pie in my face Monday in the holy name of accuracy.

As part of a newsroom contest to see who could catch the most errors before they made it into print, I offered up my face as a prize. In the first week, the opportunity to pie me in public proved more lucrative than a $10 gift card.

The pie dripping down my face was sweet. But a more error-free paper will be even sweeter.

For much of the evening Tuesday, "Two more students arrested for cocaine" was the most commented story on dailytarheel.com. It fell in the most commented rankings as we moderated and removed comments, and eventually we disabled commenting on the story altogether.

In a comment today, Xaniel asked why we disabled comments: "Did you remove the ability to leave comments on your headline story 'Two More Arrested for Cocaine' because of the criticism directed toward the DTH?"

The decision to post the 911 call placed by Courtland Smith was not an automatic one, and I knew it would be controversial. We owe it to the community to explain why we did.

We did not post the tape for shock value or to boost our Web page views. That would go against everything we stand for at The Daily Tar Heel.

We, like everyone else in the community, are searching for answers. Especially in this case, when so much is unknown and the word of authorities is particularly in doubt, it's hard to come to grips with what happened and begin to heal.

A few thousand copies of The Daily Tar Heel this morning were wrapped in a spoof version of our front page, labeling itself as the "special anti-racist issue."

We just want to let you know that the DTH had absolutely nothing to do with it. The actions this morning are illegal and a violation of the Honor Code, and appropriate measures will be taken.

The perpetrator appears to be a man named Ryan Camden. We've been unable to contact him so far.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this incident caused.

We told you earlier that we want dailytarheel.com to be the place you go when there’s news you need to know.

Monday, many of you tried, but likely had problems loading and viewing the site. We know we did here in the newsroom.

Though the new site launched on Saturday, we didn’t see high traffic until Monday, when we published our first edition of the year, a whopping 24-page paper.
