Daily Tar Heel headquarters moving off campus

The Daily Tar Heel is set to move its headquarters off campus to 151 E. Rosemary St. starting next fall.

In order to continue to grow as a business, The Daily Tar Heel must produce new content streams and hire more advertising staff, General Manager Kevin Schwartz said.

After exhausting all options to expand its space in the Student Union or move elsewhere on campus, the paper looked to move downtown.

With the move, the DTH is betting that its new content and products will generate enough revenue to support the rent and that the staff will be able to recruit and retain writers who might live on the opposite side of campus.

"There's risk in doing this, but there's risk in not doing anything." Schwartz said. "We need to move forward."

While I understand the

While I understand the reasoning for the move, I'm afraid it will isolate this critical organization from Campus. The DTH has and always will be for the students and the University, and I believe its position in the Union reflects that. I wish that they had been able to figure out a way of staying on Campus. Does the DTH still plan on maintaining its Union Space? I also feel the move will discourage freshmen and sophomore writers from joining the DTH because of the added distance. The DTH is in the center of the action now, why change that? The pictures of Alison standing across the street during the bomb threat exemplified the DTH's presence on campus, I can't see that same sense being portrayed on Rosemary St. Please reconsider.
